Italian Wedding Soup and Crescent Rolls with Dad Chef Ben Durante

Dad Chef Ben had been cooking since he was 9 yrs old… he shows us how to make Italian Wedding Soup and Crescent Rolls from scratch!

Ben Durante

Regionl Field Inspector

For the past 3 years I have been a Regional Field Inspector, inspecting and testing new residential homes to ensure that they are compliant with local, state, and federal energy efficiency requirements.  My wife, Kelly, is a Certified Massage Therapist, and has been practicing massage for 16 years. She is pretty great at it! Kelly has 2 kids, Aleshanee (14), and Patrick (12), both of whom are still figuring out their places in the world. I also have a son Leon (8) who lives in Germany with his mother. Kelly and I try to make one trip out there each year to visit him.

Q1 - What’s one tool in the kitchen you wish you had and why?

More cabinet space! I know this isn’t a tool, but with all of the tools that we already have, and all of the tools that I will continue to purchase as I need them, this is the one thing that there can never be enough of.

Q2 - What’s your biggest meal disaster?

My family loves grilled salmon, and I cook it probably 2 times a month starting in the early summer until winter every year. One time I was grilling an especially high quality filet, and left my grill for about 7 minutes which is typically not an issue as I have done that before while grilling salmon. I returned to the grill to witness flames coming out the sides, as the fat from the salmon had caused the grill to flame up quickly. By the time I had everything under control that salmon had been ruined and was inedible.

Q3 - What’s one thing you would like to learn how to make?

Not just learn, but I would love to perfect smoking all sorts of meats. Of course I need a smoker first, but that will hopefully be a purchase that is made soon. Kelly and I are both excited about it!

Q4 - If there was one dish you would teach your kid to make, what would it be?

If I could teach my kids to cook I wouldn’t have to do it as much! Though if I could start with teaching them something simple and easy it would have to be tuna casserole.

Q5 - What does it mean to you as a dad to cook for your family?

Making great food that spreads joy within my home. Be it a new recipe, or a family favorite, seeing the reactions of my family as they take their first bites is the best reward I can get!
