The New Year is here and while we’ll still be subconsciously putting 2017 down for two months, it’s time to think about new beginnings. No, I’m not talking about a Glee spinoff, but keeping up with that eating healthier New Year’s resolution. When dad cooks healthy, the family tends to cringe; but there’s no need to feed them boring steamed vegetables and baked chicken again and again and again. There are many ways to eat healthy and make it appetizing.
Alter the portions
If you’re anything like me, then meat takes up most of the plate. An amazing hamburger topped with everything under the sun could be a meal all by itself at my house. Instead of making meat the biggest portion of your plate, decrease the size and bulk up on the veggies. We’re still getting our meat, but we’re not sacrificing other foods as well. I like to split the plate with veggies taking 40 percent, carbs taking 30 percent and 30 percent meat.
Spice Things Up
If your go-to diet dish is a something so bland that hospitals wouldn’t even serve it, then you might need to spice things up a bit. Open up your spice cabinet and go wild. There are the usual go-to spices like garlic, salt, pepper, seasoning salt, etc., but there’s a whole world of spices out there that you’ve probably never heard about. It’s perfectly fine to test things out on a few veggies or pieces of chicken to just see how it tastes. The right spices can turn a bland food into something new and exciting.
It’s All About Attitude
New Year’s resolutions and diets are often met with derision and anguish. If we go into this with a bad attitude, then odds are it’s not going to stick. When every action is a chore and we dread making the healthy meal or heading out to the gym, then every greasy burger is an irresistible temptation. Instead, try to look forward to it. Turn it into a game. Give yourself treats for making goals.
