While we run about the kitchen like chickens with our heads cut off trying to fry a turkey, get the stuffing prepared and make sure Aunt Mildred isn’t smoking in the bathroom again, it’s easy to forget what the holiday is all about…family. Kid friendly recipes are an easy way to connect with our children and let them prepare a little bit of the holiday feast.
Odds are what they do isn’t going to be pretty, but anything that brings us closer to our family and takes one more thing off our plate for Thanksgiving is nice.
Mashed potatoes is one of those go to dishes on every table during the Thanksgiving holidays. Older kids can do the peeling and even the boiling, but the younger ones have the real fun.
Let the mashed potatoes get nice and soft and then let them cool for a little while. Hand the littlest kids the potato masher and let them go to town. Be prepared to lose a few potatoes in the ensuing melee, so make sure to boil up a few extras. The kids will love mashing and squishing and you get the whole thing on tape for when they’re 16.
Turkey is a Thanksgiving favorite, but slaving over a hot stove for hours on end and then serve it piping hot to the masses isn’t always appealing. Many families choose to make sandwiches, which happens to be an easy dinner recipe for kids.
Make the turkey a day before the actual event and strip away the meat. You can cut it into strips or into haphazard pieces like a pulled sandwich. Put the meat in the refrigerator and go to the store and pick up a couple loaves of fancy bread.
The kids can help make the sandwiches, and if you’re enterprising, then make them open-faced. Make up some gravy on the big day and pour it over the sandwiches.
Dress It Up
Kids love dessert. For Thanksgiving, you can let the kids dress up cookies and other desserts to look like turkeys. It’s easy. Frosting can do everything…if you want to go the boring route. Candies make the perfect faces and for that tell tale turkey plumage, use candy corn.
